Below are some, but not all, of the persons who could be included under such a heading. Most of the people included were distinguished by their writing for public consumption about matters of local significance, many by way of newspapers, their topics being local history and public issues.

Austin P. Cristy

1850-1926

Founder, editor, and publisher of Sunday Telegram (1884), and the Daily Telegram (1886) through 1919.

Editor and publisher of  the Worcester Evening Post (1897-1905)

George F. Booth

1870-1955

Editor and publisher of the Evening Gazette, 1899-1920, and co-publisher of the Telegram & Gazette, 1925-1955 *

Theodore T. Ellis

1867-1934

Editor and publisher of Telegram (1919-1925),  acquired the   Evening Gazette 1920, and consolidated the Telegram & Gazette, then sold and left the business after five years

Founders, editor, and publisher of French newspaper L’Opinion Publique, 1893- early 1920s

Franklin P. Rice

1852-1919

Historical archivist, writer, genealogist, and author of  Worcester of 1898: Fifty Years a City, 1899; transcribed 18th century town documents

William J. Larkin

(1867-1938)

Called the dean of newspapermen after 56 years with five local papers. Collection includes a PDF book of his columns.

Richard (1829-1905),

Thomas (1862-1932) , and

George O’Flynn (1889-1952)

Authority on Irish history, collector and seller of books and historic artifacts, and his sons, authors of successive volumes of a history of Worcester for students

Zelotes W. Coombs

1865-1946

Professor of English at WPI, author of  small articles on Worcester history (“jottings”), numbering in the hundreds
